The Ethical Dilemma of a Lawyer When Their Client is Lying

As a criminal defense attorney, I have encountered numerous cases where my clients have lied to me or to the court. It is a difficult situation to navigate, as my duty is to zealously represent my clients while also upholding the integrity of the legal system. When I have actual knowledge that a client has committed perjury or presented false evidence, my first duty is to protest with the client and try to convince them to voluntarily correct their false testimony or evidence. However, if the client refuses to rectify the situation, I am required to take reasonable corrective measures to remedy the fraud in court.
